Ten

Years that is. Yes, Occidentalist turns 10 today! This site has been following our travels for the past ten years! A few of the stats over those ten years: two Four Wheel Campers, two pickups, two fishing boats, about 200,000 miles, 3 countries, 38 U.S. states, two states in Mexico, 4 Canadian provinces, and about 700 nights spent in the camper(s). It’s been quite a ride over the last decade.

Check out our timeline page for a quick snapshot of all the stories posted in reverse chronological order.

The first Four Wheel Camper really started it all, beginning with the Maiden Voyage to the Ochocos. Truck campering started a whole new way of life.

Since then we have been from the Redwoods on the west coast to Acadia in Maine on the east coast. From the tip of the Baja Peninsula to the Yukon Territory. (check out the map to see the spots geographically)

We’ve done our share of backcountry adventures like the White Rim Trail and the Mojave Trail as well as backroads of the California Coast, we’ve even enjoyed camping in New Jersey!

After four years and 140 nights in the original camper, we decided that yes, we were going to use the thing. We traded into a newer model Eagle and continued the adventures in 2019.

We’ve spent a lot of holidays in the camper, including most Thanksgivings. Now that is something to be thankful for.

And we did have one occasion to get temporarily stuck, but never, luckily, stranded.

And after 250,000 miles or so on the Toyota we moved on to the Ranger.

We’ve also been out in our share of weather.

We, of course, went east to Vermont and carried on adventuring on a big east coast adventure before moving back west.

Of course it hasn’t been all about truck camping. There’s been some great fishing trips, backpacking and rafting along the way.

I didn’t know exactly what I was creating when I started this site, but I wanted a place to post a few photos and reports of trips. It’s turned into a great memory book, and also a way to share travels with friends. Ten years and over 260 posts later, I’m glad I started this thing called Occidentalist. For any of you along for the ride, we hope you’ve enjoyed it as well.

As far as what’s next… be on the lookout.

Who’s watching?

It’s time to hit the trail.
