Northern California, 2019, Part 1

We enjoyed our California Road Trip so much in 2016 we decided we needed to revisit a few places on the north coast. The week of Thanksgiving seemed like the perfect time to do it, take 3 days off and have 9 days for a road trip? Sign me up! We headed out of town on Friday and made it to Castle Crags State Park for an overnight. We didn’t have time to linger or explore but it served well for a convenient place to spend the night.

We were up early and continued our trek south to Anderson Valley.

In 2016 we only had a portion of a day in Anderson Valley and we wanted to spend more time there. We made it our southernmost point on our trip and worked north from there. We arrived with enough time to visit Anderson Valley Brewing for the afternoon. Bear + deer (=beer) abound there. And we were able to get in 18 holes of frisbee golf too. And did I mention it was t-shirt weather (in late November)!

Here, There and Malheur, 2019

Veterans Day gave us a long weekend, where would we go? There were lots of parades to choose from but in the end we decided to get away from it all. Surprised? If you are you haven’t been following along very well. Go back and read the other 99 posts (yes this is post 100!, can you believe it?) that came before this one. We headed out Friday after work and by 5:30 it was basically dark. We pulled into Chickahominy before it got too late and enjoyed a small fire as the cold wind came across the high desert. It didn’t take to long for the owl to start up, then it got closer. We were able to pick him out standing on top of a pole next to camp. He must have been 5 feet tall. We’ve been lucky with owls and coyotes near camp this year. It would be easier to list the camps with no owls or coyotes, there have been that many. Speaking of coyotes, they started up before bed and went on late into the night as well. Not a bad spot for a roadside stop.

Fall on the Steens, 2019

We have been waiting for the right time, the combination of nice fall weather and trying to time the color change on the aspens. The first weekend we had planned was forecasted to be snowy with highs possibly in the 40’s. Then the sunny weather came along and we headed east to the Steens with our fingers crossed hoping for some fall colors on the aspens.

It was nearly dark by the time we arrived. The days in October are just too short. But we awoke to blue skies and golden colors on the trees.
