A few weeks back we escaped to the Metolius for a quick overnight trip. It’s a short drive to a beautiful spot here in central Oregon, but not one we frequent.
The weather was great, the crowds were there, but nothing like a summer weekend. The fishing on the other hand, well, let’s just say I didn’t expect to catch anything, and the Metolius met my expectations.
You’d think, with catch and release fly fishing that the actual catching would be better, but the fish on the Metolius are elusive. Well, I can’t think of a better place to cast and camp on a warm spring weekend.
Graced by big pines and clear blue water, we’ll be back to enjoy it again, and maybe I’ll hook that fish I missed.
The Metolius is a demanding river, but oh so beautiful. The day we fished it we ran into John Judy, the guy that wrote the book on fly fishing the Metolius. He was striking out too. Your photos and story are stirring the urge to return. Thank you for sharing.
If you are going to strike out, the Metolius is the place to do it! Next time….
