Since moving last month most of our time has been spent getting settled in and figuring out where things are. We have been out and about a bit and our first hike was on the long trail starting out at Hazen’s Notch State Park.
Hazen’s Notch is a pass just south of us named for Moses Hazen who was a brigadier general in the Continental Army who led the construction of the road in 1779. It is now a State Park that provides access to Vermont’s famed Long Trail.
We decided to take the trail north and worked our way uphill for a while hoping to reach a view at the top of Sugarloaf Mountain. We didn’t find the view we hoped for but the trail provided some good exercise and a lush hardwood forest to hike through.
Hiking Jay Peak
After our hike at Hazen’s Notch we knew we were in for some serious hiking in these parts. The Long Trail was constructed in the early 1900’s and seems to mainly just charge up and down hills, regardless of terrain or rock in the way. You’re headed to the top of the peak, aim for the top and start hiking! So, even though the trail to the top of Jay Peak was a relatively short one it was a decent challenge given the rock and steepness of the trail. The work paid off with a great view at the summit.
I am looking forward to seeing this same landscape as the colors transform over the next few weeks. We’ll see you then.
