We were rumbling south on I-15 with cars whizzing by on our left and right, as if the 75 MPH limit was too low. I-15 from Ogden to Provo has to be one of the worst stretches of driving anywhere in the country, (and we’ve driven from coast to coast) with it’s constant speeding traffic, billboards and chain stores for mile after mile. With our fall tour of the southwest starting three weeks later than planned we were making a bee line for a warmer climate, so I-15 became a necessity.

Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge, 2023

We were going to be out and about for Memorial Day and hoping to avoid the crowds. Where to go on one of the busiest outdoor weekends of the year? Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge in northern Nevada was on the list and looked like a good candidate. It turned out the be a great place to get away from the crowds see some wildlife and abundant wildflowers and stretch our legs wandering among the sage.

Southwest 2020, Nevada

We had grand plans that started in 2019 – Baja in 2020! Fishing, camping on the beach, tacos, cervezas. Then a little pandemic came along. We started thinking backup plans. Three weeks off and where to go? November limits options to points south. The southwest it was – Nevada, Utah, New Mexico, Arizona, here we come. This is the story of 23 days and over 4000 miles on the road.

Since I feel like I have to address it: for those of you thinking…. ‘you can’t travel, it’s too risky’…. consider the fact that we go to work every day in an office, coming into contact with all sorts of people, service over health has been the priority around here. Now three weeks on the road only going indoors once a week or so for groceries seems like a pretty safe proposition. Ok, that’s all I am going to say about that.
