From the Chihuahuan to the Sonoran – West Across Arizona’s Deserts

After leaving Whitewater Draw we continued our westward progress across southern Arizona. We made a brief stop in Tombstone, but as I mentioned before, there wasn't much for us there. Sandhill Cranes of Whitewater Draw

After a day in the Chiricahua Mountains we continued to move west across southern Arizona to our next stop at Whitewater Draw Wildlife Area. Somewhere along the way of looking into potential destinations I had read that sandhill cranes overwinter there in large numbers so we decided to drop in and check it out.

Chiricahua National Monument

After leaving Fort Bowie we stopped in to get oriented at the Chiricahua National Monument. We didn’t have enough time left in the day to see much, so we picked a map and came up with a plan for the following day. We talked for a while with Vince, who was bikepacking the back roads from Tucson to Las Cruces and had stopped in to top off his water before heading over the mountains. We met a few interesting people on this tour of the southwest, Vince was one of them.
