The day after Thanksgiving we packed up and departed the Navajo National Monument. The weather forecast was predicting quite a change in the weather, with a shift to snow and cold, so we scrapped our initial list of northern New Mexico sites to visit on this trip, and made a big move south. We stopped off for a quick break at the Hubbell Trading Post National Historic Site which has been in operation since 1878.
After departing Gold Butte we spent most of the day getting to our next destination, the White Pocket, located in the Vermilion Cliffs National Monument in Arizona. We pulled into camp near the trailhead right at dusk. The colors in the sky were amazing.
We were rumbling south on I-15 with cars whizzing by on our left and right, as if the 75 MPH limit was too low. I-15 from Ogden to Provo has to be one of the worst stretches of driving anywhere in the country, (and we’ve driven from coast to coast) with it’s constant speeding traffic, billboards and chain stores for mile after mile. With our fall tour of the southwest starting three weeks later than planned we were making a bee line for a warmer climate, so I-15 became a necessity.
