Lost River Basin, 2023

There is a place in Idaho that has the highest mountains in the state, abundant high elevation lakes and relatively few people. It’s hard to put a label on it, and it hasn’t been branded with this or that “protection” that usually brings in the hordes and destroys the place with crowds fawning all over the place. We got to spend a few days there this August.

Grande Ronde River 2023

After a lot of unpacking of boxes we took a week off from moving and headed to the Grande Ronde River. We thought we were timing it just right, the flow was set to drop below 1500 CFS and the fishing really picks up as the river drops. Little did we know the water would be a murky brown from intense rain. The fishing was the worst I’ve ever seen it, but getting on the river still can’t be beat.

Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge, 2023

We were going to be out and about for Memorial Day and hoping to avoid the crowds. Where to go on one of the busiest outdoor weekends of the year? Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge in northern Nevada was on the list and looked like a good candidate. It turned out the be a great place to get away from the crowds see some wildlife and abundant wildflowers and stretch our legs wandering among the sage.
