Backpacking the Selway

Spring is definitely springing in north central Idaho. Wildflowers are blooming and things are coming alive out in the woods. I’m thinking spring is the new summer when it comes to backpacking. No hundred degree days, no wildfire smoke, less crowds. Of course the high country is still under snow, so we kept it close to home for this one and headed to the Selway River for a low elevation spring backpack.

Larkspur, fern

With just an hour to drive we were on the trail before too much of the day had passed. The trail up the river is mostly gradual with some climbing to get around cliffs that plunge into the river. The varying elevation provides some good views.

Before too long we found a camp a few miles upriver and settled in for the night.

Fiddlehead fern, poised to uncoil

The next day we day hiked (no packs) up the river for some more exploration. Views continued around every corner.

Reminiscent of Yosemite, sans crowds
Nice river camp…if you have a raft

After our up and back we had another quiet evening watching the river go by. Yep, we mainly sat back and watched the river as the afternoon sky headed for the horizon.

Our weather window was closing. Three days in the near 70’s and then it was switching back to cold and rainy. Time to pack up and hit the trail. The next morning we headed for home, glad to get out and enjoy some spring time in the woods.

It’s a glorious time of year – get out and enjoy!
