Scorching temperatures and smoke, that is what July and August seem to consist of. So we were excited to see some cooling in the forecast as summer turned toward fall. The sky turned back to the blue it should be, and we turned our attention to the high country for a few days of exploring and searching for grouse.
Here is the video from the “fall trip to the woods”:
This was a short trip up into the backyard. Being only our second fall in north central Idaho we still have a lot of places to explore close to home. Fall is a nice time to be out – the snow that kept us from this high country in the spring is long gone, and the smoke of summer has passed. The colors had started to turn in the understory, creating a carpet of reds and yellows.
We found a spot on an open ridge for our first night. We could see for miles to the west. We were treated to a nice sunset that seemed to take on different colors and gave us a nice hour long show.
We found a couple old logging roads to hike. We wandered out the first one, and things were pretty quiet. After an hour or so out and back we were nearly back to the truck, when we found our first grouse. Over the next two days we were able to track down a couple more, just enough for dinner once we were back home.
It was a short trip to the woods, but it was sure nice to see the season transitioning from the hot of summer to the cool crisp of fall. I hope you’ve had a chance to find fall in the woods over the past couple months.
